RCH is awarded as "Energy-Conscious Company"

At RCG, sustainability is not only of central importance to us, we see it as an integral part of responsible business behaviour. Therefore, Rail Cargo Hungaria’s award is all the more satisfying: RCH is the first Hungarian railway company to be awarded the "Energy-Conscious Company” title.

Imre Kovács, Chairman of the RCH Board, solemnly accepted the certificate on 20 September 2018 at the Hungarian Ministry of Innovation and Technology. Szilárd Neuschl, Head of Quality and Process Management at RCH, and Boglárka Mondvay-Németh, Head of Marketing and Communication at RCH also attended the event. Imre Kovács emphasized that this recognition underscores our activities in terms of environmental protection and sustainability.

CO2 emissions savings

The rail business model is already a sustainable one. In 2017, the transport services provided by RCH amounted to 6551 million net tonne kilometres. The fact that 32 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail rather than by road saved the environment more than 304,000 tonnes of CO2. *

Virtual power plant programme

In addition, there are several active measures in place when it comes to energy efficiency. For example, RCH participates in the "Virtual Power Plant Programme", under which participants commit to reducing their energy consumption. The resulting energy savings are collected as virtual power plant bricks. The aim is to (virtually) build the second largest power plant in Hungary by 2030, in relation to the largest physical power plant. RCH's contribution to this includes implementing brake energy regeneration in its locomotives.

Active environmental protection - resource conservation

Resource conservation also makes an important contribution to environmental protection. Digitization initiatives in RCH's office processes reduce paper consumption by approximately 1 to 1.5 tonnes each year. In 2015, 34 tonnes of paper were needed, a year later the amount totalled 32 tonnes and last year only 31 tonnes were used.

Environmentally conscious employees

RCH also organises environment based activities which many colleagues attend e.g. voluntary litter picking sessions together with customers.

The basis for systematic environmental management and the implementation of efficient measures is the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard, which specifies requirements and provides guidance for organisations wishing to improve their environmental performance, fulfil legal and other obligations and achieve environmental objectives.

The award shows that we are on the right path with our measures and initiatives. We will certainly continue our focus on sustainability in the future.
