RCG digitalises connecting siding processes at voestalpine Stahl Donawitz

voestalpine Stahl Donawitz operates one of the largest connecting sidings in Austria. Together with RCG, a digitalisation project funded by Federal Ministry Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure Republic of Austria ((BMIMI) and operated by Schieneninfrastruktur-Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH (SCHIGmbH) is being implemented there. The aim is to simplify processes in Donawitz – from wagon ordering, plant logistics and scheduling to shipping and receiving – and to digitalise inbound and outbound control. The solution developed designed to be transferable to other industrial companies in the future.

Agile development in direct dialogue with customers  

The project builds on MIKE – RCG's digital logistics platform: a scalable interface will expand the existing site management tool in Donawitz into a comprehensive connecting siding management tool. The approach is just as innovative as the solution itself: instead of rigid, multi-year project plans, RCG relies on agile development in short cycles. Customer requests are incorporated directly, new functions are tested together with the customer and continuously refined. The result is a digital service that is precisely tailored to the specific requirements on site – and at the same time a model for other customers.

Initial results and potential for further applications  

The benefits are clear: simplified processes, fewer empty runs, better utilisation of trains and significantly less manual effort. This saves time and energy, improves the environmental footprint and strengthens the site – while also laying the foundation for the broader digitalisation of connecting sidings in Austria.

This project is funded by the Federal Ministry Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure Republic of Austria ((BMIMI) and implemented by Schieneninfrastruktur-Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH (SCHIG mbH) as part of the logistics funding programme.
