binderholz: on track towards residential construction

Long-standing partnership, new project: the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is transporting prefabricated timber construction elements for residential buildings in a climate-friendly way – from Austria to the Netherlands.

The binderholz Group has relied on RCG’s services for the transport of sawn timber and timber construction products for over 40 years. In the current project, RCG is handling rail transport of prefabricated wall and ceiling elements for residential construction. The client is the binderholz company “b-solution”.

Trial transports with future potential

Last year, RCG successfully carried out the first trial transports – now the project is entering its next phase: starting in 2026, 150–200 wagons per year are planned – equivalent to saving up to 500 truck journeys.
The route runs from the production site in Hallein via single wagonload traffic to Linz. There, the wagons are integrated into the TransFER Linz–Antwerp and transported on to Belgium. From Antwerp, the journey continues to Moerdijk in the Netherlands – all under RCG’s own traction. The final leg to the construction sites is handled by the customer using electric trucks.

Innovative equipment for efficient loading

Special 20-foot aluminium frames – so-called “racks” – are used for transport. These customer-provided frames enable fast and secure loading: the entire load is placed on the wagon in a single lift, just like a container – a decisive advantage in terms of time and handling. This not only increases efficiency but also enhances process reliability along the entire transport chain.
