More status updates for continuous transport visibility

With a new enhancement to MIKE Tracking, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is integrating train running information from the European rail infrastructure into shipment tracking. This means more status information is now available for shipments in transit, providing greater transparency throughout the transport process.

Transporting goods across Europe involves different rail networks and often multiple operating partners. Continuous GPS data or information from data exchange partners is not always available for every wagon and every section of the journey. To provide customers with a more complete view of their shipment and transport progress, RCG has added a new functionality to its digital logistics platform MIKE. MIKE Tracking can now provide more status updates for shipments in transit and reduce existing information gaps.

Better visibility throughout the transport process

For customers, this means a clearer view of where a shipment is along its journey, providing a better basis for onward planning. At the same time, additional automated status information can reduce the need for manual checks and enable faster, more informed responses on shipment status.

Additional data for a more complete transport picture

Newly developed logic brings together the different data sources: train running information from the European rail infrastructure, train composition data and consignment note information. By combining these individual data points, MIKE Tracking provides a more complete view of the shipment and transport progress – including for transports without own GPS-equipped wagons or those operated by partner traction providers. The data base and the quality of the available information are being continuously expanded and improved.

Digitalisation initiative as the starting point

The new functionality was developed as part of a SCHIG-funded digitalisation project carried out together with voestalpine Stahl Donawitz. The aim of the project was to pilot an integrated logistics solution across the supply chain and unlock significant efficiency gains.
