TransFER updates in wagonload traffic

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is strengthening its TransFER network in wagonload traffic with more round trips, adjusted routes and optimised connections between Austria, Germany and Scandinavia.

Whether from Salzburg to the Rhine-Ruhr region, to southern Germany or further north towards Scandinavia, RCG is systematically developing its TransFER network in conventional wagonload traffic. Customers benefit from plannable connections, attractive transit times and sustainable end-to-end rail logistics solutions.

More round trips: TransFER Salzburg–Duisburg–Wels

The previous TransFER Linz–Duisburg–Wels has been operating from Salzburg since the timetable change in December 2025 and will be known as TransFER Salzburg–Duisburg–Wels going forward. This strengthens the connection between the federal state of Salzburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region, as well as onward connections to Rotterdam, Antwerp and Scandinavia. Since May, the TransFER has been running ten round trips per week, creating additional capacity and greater planning reliability for international wagonload traffic between Austria, Germany, the Benelux countries and northern Europe.

More round trips: TransFER Salzburg–Augsburg–Ulm

The TransFER Salzburg–Augsburg–Ulm is also being expanded, with the frequency increasing from three to four round trips per week. In addition, onward transport to Ulm will in future be offered twice a week. The TransFER connects Austria with southern Germany and links key economic centres such as Salzburg and Augsburg with the whole of Central and South-Eastern Europe. In Ulm, goods can be distributed directly to customers with private sidings or delivered and collected via the nearby transshipment hub in Ummendorf.

New focus: TransFER Duisburg–Scandinavia

With the TransFER Duisburg–Scandinavia, RCG is clearly aligning the connection with cargo flows between Duisburg and Scandinavia. Three weekly round trips ensure stable, plannable transport. Via Malmö, both onward distribution within the Scandinavian single wagonload network and the integration of volumes from across Scandinavia are possible. Austrian freight can be added via the TransFER Salzburg–Duisburg–Wels; cargo flows from Scandinavia can be distributed via Duisburg within Germany and onwards to France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Everything efficiently by rail

The TransFER connections are suitable for conventional wagonloads as well as dangerous goods transports in accordance with RID. The offer is complemented by comprehensive end-to-end logistics solutions, including first- and last-mile services and additional freight forwarding services such as transshipment, warehousing logistics and customs services – safely, reliably and from a single source.
