700,000 tonnes per year for voestalpine Tubulars

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) transports more than 700,000 tonnes every year for the customer voestalpine Tubulars – from the delivery of the raw material to the dispatch of the finished high-tech pipes – in an eco-friendly way by rail. This corresponds to a CO2 saving of over 1,000 tonnes.

voestalpine Tubulars produces high-tech seamless tubes that prove themselves under the toughest conditions. Such tubes were used, for example, as tunnel anchors in the construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel. RCG and voestalpine Tubulars have been partners for over 40 years. In addition to the raw material, RCG also transports the finished pipes.

From Styria to the most important seaports

It all starts in Styria. RCG transports the prefabricated raw material from the steel plant in Leoben to the Tubulars plant in Kindberg. This means between 300,000 and 400,000 tonnes of raw material every year in round trips with three to four block trains per week. After the production of the pipes, they are loaded onto the trains and go from Kindberg to the North and Mediterranean ports – from the Austrian border these transports are carried out in cooperation with partners. From there the pipes are shipped all over the world.

For the sake of the environment

With both RCG services – the transport of raw materials and the transport of finished pipes – voestalpine Tubulars saves thousands of truck trips – in the case of the raw material alone, this amounts to almost 15,000 trips per year. voestalpine Tubulars is striving to increase this figure even further in the future. We look forward to many more years of cooperation with voestalpine Tubulars.
