The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is providing support in the Ukraine conflict with what it does best – transport and logistics services. This is not just to support those affected by the crisis, but also to keep the industry operating. RCG has been transported grain from the Ukraine for many years. However, agricultural transport has been stepped up since war broke out, mainly towards North Germany. From March to April 2022, RCG organised 30 trains out of Ukraine, carrying a total of 60,000 tonnes of grain. Ukrainian corn is used as animal feed across the EU.

First transports to Upper Austria

On Friday, 6 May 2022, the first train full of Ukrainian corn arrived in Austria. Its destination was Aschach an der Donau in the Upper Austrian Eferding district. On its way there, the train also stopped off at Vienna Kledering station, where it was welcomed by Minister for Agriculture Elisabeth Köstinger, Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Khymynets and ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.

Plans for two transports per month

Future plans involve two grain transports per month from Ukraine to Austria. Each train transports 1,400 tonnes of grain and consists of 25 bulk goods wagons.
