From non-cranable to cranable: RCG makes it possible

With r2L, ISU and ROLA, the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) enables the transport of non-cranable trailers and trucks in intermodal traffic.

In combined transport, cranable trailers and special terminal infrastructure are usually required. But what if the trailer is not cranable – as is the case for around 90–95% of semi-trailers on Europe’s roads? RCG has the answer: with r2L and ISU, it brings not only cranable containers but also non-cranable semi-trailers onto rail – and with ROLA, entire trucks: three systems that significantly reduce road mileage and CO₂ emissions by shifting transport to rail.

r2L: RCG is a certified network partner

With r2L certification, RCG is now part of a network of operators, terminals and rail companies that provide a technology designed to better connect road and rail and make handling non-cranable trailers much easier. As an r2L network partner, RCG opens up access to intermodal transport for customes – quickly and easily.
The trailer is placed on a special platform, which is lifted onto the wagon by crane – without ramps and in just five minutes. Advantages for forwarders: no toll and fuel costs, competitive rates and a higher permissible gross weight. r2L is currently in use between Germany, Benelux and Romania.

ISU on TransFER Wels–Trieste

In addition to r2L, RCG offers ISU (“Innovative Semitrailer Handling Unit”) as another solution for non-cranable trailers. ISU has been part of TransFER Wels–Trieste for over ten years, with six weekly round trips. The trimodal concept – truck, RoRo ferry, rail – significantly shortens transit times between Europe and Turkey.
The principle is simple – inspired by illegally parked cars being lifted by wheel clamps: the semi-trailer is driven over a ramp onto a special lifting device, uncoupled and safely lifted onto a pocket wagon using wheel grippers. ISU thus acts as an adapter system between trailer and rail.

ROLA: truck transport by rail

The Rolling Road (ROLA) is another system that combines road and rail. RCG transports trucks or semi-trailers that cover part of their route by rail – relieving heavily used transit routes from heavy truck traffic. Trucks are loaded onto special low-floor wagons at terminals, while drivers travel in accompanying coaches with on-board services.

Easy entry with existing vehicle fleet

All three systems enable participation in combined transport with the existing vehicle fleet – without retrofitting, additional equipment or investment. At the same time, customers benefit from the advantages of combined transport, such as higher payloads, exemptions from driving bans, liberalised zones and tax breaks.
