Koralm Railway kick-off for freight transport

Even before passenger services begin in December, the first freight trains belonging to the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) have been running along the new line since early November. This boosts climate-friendly logistics in Austria and shortens transport times between Carinthia and Styria.

With the commissioning of the Koralm Railway, the RCG is sending a strong signal: trains can now travel much faster from Villach to Graz, eliminating the detour via Knittelfeld, Leoben and Frohnleiten. Thanks to the gentler gradient of the new flat route, each train can now carry an additional 250-280 tonnes, saving up to 300,000 train kilometres each year and reducing overall energy consumption.

Omya relies on the Koralm Railway

One of the first transports is a single wagonload train carrying a group of wagons for Omya. Our long-standing customer has relied on rail logistics for years and will increasingly transport mineral fillers within Austria via the Koralm Railway in the future. The company will benefit from shorter transit times and even more efficient transport, which will help reduce CO₂ emissions and strengthen rail freight transport.

The Koralm Railway as part of the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor

The Koralm Railway, which forms part of the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor, will further strengthen Austria's position as a central logistics hub. Alongside the existing line, it will create a four-track southern axis with up to 30% more capacity for rail transport –a significant step towards sustainable mobility and modal shift to rail.
