500 new freight wagons for scrap metal transport

The Eanos-y wagons have been specially developed for transporting light metal scrap and sheared scrap. A 15% increase in loading volume, combined with an optimised and robust design, makes loading easier and saves valuable time.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is modernising its fleet by leasing 500 new Eanos-y freight wagons from MFD Rail. Deliveries have been under way since the beginning of 2026, with 110 wagons already in service. All 500 wagons will be in operation by mid-2027.

Greater capacity and shorter loading times 

With a loading volume of around 95 m³, the new wagons offer approximately 15% more capacity than the standard Eanos wagon. This allows the available payload of around 65 tonnes to be used more effectively, particularly when transporting bulky, high-volume materials. The increased loading volume and optimised design make loading easier and reduce loading times. Ideas and suggestions from RCG customers also helped shape the wagons’ design. Improvements to the wagon body, doors and other components reduce the risk of damage. All wagons are equipped with modern telematics systems.

Part of a long-term fleet strategy 

The new Eanos-y wagons will gradually replace older, maintenance-intensive rolling stock while also expanding the available fleet. “Leasing these 500 new wagons is a targeted step in the modernisation of our fleet. Their greater loading volume and more robust design increase transport efficiency. This is an important element of our long-term fleet strategy,” explains Bettina Castillo, Member of the Board at RCG.

Operating across Europe 

The wagons will be used to transport scrap metal for the Austrian and European steel and recycling industries. Thanks to their G1 loading gauge and unrestricted shunting capability, they can operate throughout Europe’s standard-gauge rail network.
