Rohrdorfer – moving raw materials sustainably by rail

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) transports large volumes of raw materials by rail for the Rohrdorfer Group – reliably, predictably and with significantly lower emissions.

Building-material production involves moving substantial volumes of materials such as granulated blast-furnace slag, other forms of slag, limestone and anhydrite efficiently and reliably. This is precisely where rail freight comes into its own. Since 2014, Rohrdorfer has relied on RCG’s rail logistics services for its cement plants in Rohrdorf and Gmunden. One major advantage is that both sites have their own industrial sidings. This enables raw materials to be delivered directly to the plants or transported onwards without detours, efficiently and with significantly less impact on the road network.

Over one million tonnes transported by rail 

In 2025, RCG transported around 1.16 million tonnes of raw materials and building materials for Rohrdorfer by rail. Different wagon types and specialised logistics solutions are used, depending on the cargo and route. These include Falns and Talns bulk wagons, as well as the MOBILER system. Services operate via locations including Kirchbichl, Fischbach, Rohrdorf and Gmunden. RCG manages the entire logistics process, from planning and coordination to operational delivery.

Tailored solution for the Brenner Base Tunnel 

A current project for the Brenner Base Tunnel demonstrates the scale and capabilities of this partnership. Since January 2026, Rohrdorfer has been transporting Fluasit, a concrete additive produced at its Gmunden cement plant, by rail to Steinach am Brenner. 

Steinach is the location of construction lot H53, which, at 25 kilometres in length, is the largest construction lot on the Austrian section of the Brenner Base Tunnel. Around 480 tonnes of Fluasit are delivered to the site every week. By the time work on the construction lot is completed, which is currently scheduled for 2029, around 40,000 tonnes are expected to be transported by rail from Gmunden in total.

Fewer trucks on the Brenner route 

Every journey that is shifted away from the road on the heavily congested Brenner corridor makes a difference. Transporting the Fluasit volumes by rail will eliminate approximately 1,480 truck journeys over the full delivery period. This reduces pressure on one of the busiest transport routes across the Alps, while ensuring a reliable supply of materials for one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects.

Sustainable, predictable and built for the long term 

The partnership between Rohrdorfer and RCG is based on a multi-year agreement and is constantly evolving. Innovative logistics concepts, suitable equipment and direct rail connections enable large quantities of raw materials to be transported efficiently by rail. In 2025 alone, these rail services saved around 5,015 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent compared to road transport. This is roughly equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 670 people in Austria.

This partnership demonstrates the potential of modern building-material logistics: reliable supplies, efficient operations and a significantly more sustainable alternative to road transport.
