The Bernegger Group is an Austrian family-owned firm that specialises in the operation of gravel and crushed stone works. About 1,000 employees work across 19 locations, producing three million tonnes every year. RCG and Bernegger have had a partnership based on trust and mutual collaboration for seven years. In 2022, RCG trains transported approximately 455,000 tonnes of gravel and crushed stone on three connection lines.
Here comes industrial siding no. 4
Bernegger wants to increase these volumes further and has therefore invested in a fourth industrial siding in Leobendorf-Stetten, near Korneuburg. The development was planned, coordinated and implemented in collaboration with RCG and ÖBB INFRA. This site is particularly attractive because its geographical location makes it accessible for transporting raw materials by rail. In addition, recycling and construction material from Lower Austria can be transported to the company's own raw materials park in Enns, where it can be reused. The first block train consisting of groups of wagons carrying special crushed stone has already completed its journey – RCG will handle a total of 140,000 tonnes on the new industrial siding in the initial phase of operations. Bernegger will save 4,000 truck journeys in this phase alone. The volume transported will rise to 300,000 tonnes in the ramping-up phase.
Grand opening
The new industrial siding was officially opened at the beginning of July. In addition to representatives from the state of Lower Austria and the Bernegger company, ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä attended the celebration. “The company’s 5.2-hectare site offers opportunities for sustainable development. That’s why we have built a fourth connection line with ÖBB here. It’s the perfect addition to our logistics concept. Efficient transport solutions help us to reduce emissions,” says Managing Director Kurt Bernegger. Industrial sidings play a key role in shifting transport from road to rail and are indispensable for efficient – and above all sustainable – logistics connections.
