Mosolf shifts BYD vehicle transport to rail

A single ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) train can carry around 230 new BYD vehicles. RCG transports the electric cars from the port of Wilhelmshaven to inland locations for vehicle logistics provider Mosolf – using a rail solution that adapts flexibly to import volumes.

The electric car market is booming, with more and more new vehicles arriving in Germany and Europe via Wilhelmshaven. For vehicle logistics provider Mosolf, this means additional transport capacity is needed. As part of a new contract for Chinese car manufacturer BYD, Mosolf is therefore making greater use of rail – and has been working with RCG since 2026. Rail is increasingly taking over the volumes that cannot be handled entirely by road.

From ship to rail

After arriving in Wilhelmshaven, the new BYD vehicles are loaded onto special Laaers double-deck car-carrying wagons. A single block train can accommodate around 230 cars and then travels to Mosolf Group's inland locations in southern and eastern Germany. There, the vehicles are taken over for the next stage of their journey. RCG provides the necessary wagons and organises the long-distance transport. This brings together several elements to create a seamless supply chain from the port to the hinterland.

Flexibility with TransFLEX

The service uses TransFLEX, RCG's flexible block train solution. It is specifically designed for transport operations where demand and planning requirements may change at short notice. Unlike regular TransFER services, which operate according to a timetable, TransFLEX allows the timing, volume and route to be flexibly tailored to individual transport requirements. This flexibility is particularly important in vehicle logistics, as the timing and number of vehicles requiring onward transport depend, among other things, on arriving ships and the respective import volumes. TransFLEX combines this flexibility with a key advantage of rail: the ability to carry large volumes at once.

Capacity when it is needed

To ensure that transport operations are not only flexible but also reliable, locomotive and wagon capacity is specifically allocated to these services. This gives Mosolf planning certainty while also providing room to respond to changing volumes. Rail thus becomes an important additional component of BYD imports via Wilhelmshaven: it accommodates large volumes, reduces the burden on road transport and moves vehicles together to the locations where they continue their journey.
