DAC is introduced to ÖBB employees

How the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) will change job profiles was demonstrated and discussed on October 4th and 12th, 2023, at DAK4STAFF events in Vienna and Fürnitz.

The introduction of the Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) represents a revolution for freight transport in Europe, leading to a long-term competitive advantage. However, it also brings new benefits for those working in this field, making their daily routines easier. Being a shunter is a challenging profession that demands significant physical effort and is carried out under extreme weather conditions at all times of day and night. In the future, this profession will become more diverse in its tasks and, in terms of physical exertion, safer and easier. Currently, trains are manually coupled, involving lifting and transferring the heavy 20kg coupling hook between the wagons. DAC automates this process, making it significantly more efficient and safer.

Providing people with a safe and attractive workplace

Employees of ÖBB with a connection to DAC and selected stakeholders, in cooperation with the "WKO Fachverband Schienenbahnen" and the "Verband Privatgüterwagen-Interessenten", had the opportunity to see these changes firsthand on October 4th in Vienna and October 12th in Fürnitz. The focus was on mutual exchange, DAC demonstrations, and open discussions on current topics related to DAC with experts from the ÖBB DAC Corporate Program. Despite the numerous process innovations brought by DAC, it became clear that motivated individuals will still be needed in this field, and the professions of shunter and wagon master will become more attractive. Particularly gratifying was the great interest and the shared, honest exchange on various topics related to work safety, technological development, schedules, and much more.

DAC4EU train in Austria for the second time

Before the DAC4EU demonstrator train arrived in Austria this year, various tests were conducted in Serbia and Hungary. As part of ERJU FP5, EDDP, and the DAC4EU consortium, it is our responsibility as ÖBB, together with our European partners in the railway industry, to prepare for a seamless transition. We are ready to contribute and lead rail freight transport into a bright future. With DAC, it is possible to operate longer trains with more weight and higher frequency. The availability of power and data lines also opens up new possibilities for DAC applications such as automated brake testing, wagon sequencing, and train integrity. DAC Type 4 enables automatic coupling, and DAC Type 5 additionally allows for automatic uncoupling. All of this will result in significant time savings, which, in turn, translate into cost savings and an increase in the competitiveness of rail freight transport.

Heavier, further, faster

The goal is to revolutionize rail freight transport both technologically and professionally: Heavier, farther, faster is the Maxime. DAC is, not least, a substantial component in achieving the EU's climate goals (Green Deal). Achieving series readiness and sufficient testing in demonstrator trains and commercial trains will be crucial before the widespread market introduction planned for 2028 across Europe. Until then, the DAK initiative still has a long way to go.
